What is The Hawk and why should I subscribe?

I’m a lifelong Hampshire cricket lover and a freelance sportswriter specialising in the game. And like you, I’ve become increasingly disheartened by the shrinking, often non-existent coverage of domestic cricket, in both the local and national press. 

Growing up, I would pore over coverage of Hampshire, reading match reports from exotic sounding places like Chelmsford, Scarborough and Chester-le-Street.  

The characters of the game, meanwhile, ran like a theme through the sporting summer, their successes and excesses celebrated, their failures documented.  

That’s no longer the case.

Coverage is now monopolised by the England team, with exclusive stories related to the 18 counties almost completely ignored.  

Domestic cricket, though, remains a vibrant, passionate and close-knit community, with a thirst for the stories that currently go largely unreported.  

Which is where I come in.  

I’m launching The Hawk—a new, independent content service dedicated exclusively to Hampshire cricket. 

The Hawk is borne out of a love for the game and a frustration with the neglect it has suffered as the media continues to grapple with an uncertain future.  

With circulations of papers, at a national, regional and local level, all plunging and ad revenues going in a similar direction, the budgets just simply aren't there to do domestic cricket justice.

Which is where you come in.

The Hawk will only ever be as successful as the number of people willing to pay for comprehensive coverage of the sport they love and follow.

I'm now offering that coverage for the price of a couple of coffees a month, or in 2025, maybe that should be one and a half! Surely that has to be something to raise a glass (or an insulted cup) to.

I will provide something no one else involved in domestic cricket is currently able to do - provide regular, timely, insightful, and uniquely informed content about Hampshire cricket.  

On and off the field. 

Given the extraordinary pace at which the county game is evolving, this service has never been as important.  

And I firmly believe that this is about more than cricket.  It’s about community, it’s about celebrating the sport’s heritage, savouring the present and safeguarding the future.  

The Hawk will offer exclusive interviews, in-depth features, timely news, and opinion pieces that aim to generate debate in pavilions, pubs and cafes across the county.  

In an era where authentic, quality cricket journalism is fast disappearing, The Hawk will be a sharp-eyed, independent voice for those who still care deeply about Hampshire cricket. 

This is for the die-hards, the hopefuls, the curious, and anyone tired of scrolling endlessly for a paragraph on the county game.  

The Hawk is here because the story of Hampshire cricket still matters—and it deserves to be told properly.
