Mayes illustrates perfect sense of timing

Ben Mayes was global news last week after smashing a record score for England under-19s in one day cricket at the World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe. Now he's eyeing a place in Hampshire's red ball side this summer.

The line to Ben Mayes' hotel in Bulawayo isn't the best.

There's a delay on the line, and some of the 18-year-old's responses are delivered in the kind of sound quality you might have expected on a long-distance call long before WhatsApp was invented.

It's in sharp contrast to the clarity of approach and speed of execution that typified Mayes' show-stopping 191 off just 117 balls against Scotland in Harare on Wednesday.

His strike rate was a scarcely believable 163.25 as England piled on both agony and runs against a powerless Scotland.
