Defeat and it was all over. Relegation confirmed.
Victory? Well, it was probably still all over but at least there was a semblance of hope going into the final week of the season. Interest in safety would be maintained. Albeit tenuously.
As it is, day two at Grace Road will rank as one of the best of a troubled season, particularly with the bat.
