Hampshire have endured a difficult Division One campaign, and now an eight point deduction for a "below average" pitch against Sussex in May, has made their task of avoiding relegation all the more difficult.

Sussex won that Utilita Bowl clash by nine wickets, chasing down a tiny fourth innings target after rolling the hosts for just 154 and 165 in their two innings.

Now, after that humbling, Hampshire have had insult added to injury, with a points deduction imposed by the independent Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP), as well as a hefty £5000 fine.

Hampshire have 14 days to decide whether to appeal that verdict.
