Pitch Perfect? - Leicestershire Face Sanction by Cricket Regulator for Glamorgan Surface

As reported by The Hawk last month, the regulator was alerted after match referee Mark Ramage marked the pitch 'below average'.

ECB Pitch and Grounds advisor, Andy McKay was seen on the square at Grace Road at the conclusion of a game that the hosts won by 42 runs to boost their Division One survival hopes.

A statement released this morning by the Cricket Regulator read:

"Following an investigation by the Cricket Regulator, Leicestershire County Cricket Club have been charged with breaching the ECB Pitch Regulations.

"The investigation followed the Match Officials reporting the pitch at Uptonsteel Grace Road following the Rothesay County Championship match against Glamorgan, played between 20th to 23rd August 2026.

"The matter has now be referred to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel for adjudication. As proceedings are ongoing, no further comment will be made by the Cricket Regulator."

The Foxes responded with a statement of their own, strongly refuting the allegations.

Leicestershire still find themselves in relegation trouble but remain within touching distance of the likes of Yorkshire, Essex, Surrey and Glamorgan.

A points deduction would severely damage any hopes of staying in the top flight.

Hampshire know exactly how the Foxes feel.

Almost a year to the day, Hampshire were docked eight points and fined £5000 by the Cricket Regulator for a "substandard pitch" for the pitch prepared by the county for their County Championship fixture against Sussex four months previously.

That points deduction saw Hampshire drop from fifth to eighth pace in the Division One and proved a sucker punch in Hampshire's Division One run-in.

Leicestershire's punishment is unlikely to be as harsh but it could still prove significant - perhaps not for Hampshire, whose position already appears impossible, but certainly for those sides that sit just above them.
