It looked like being three successive Saturdays of sporting misery for Hampshire as the players packed their kit away for a final time in the 2025 County Championship season.

As it was, a message giving Hampshire hope had arrived on Friday evening.

Jimmy Adams, Hampshire's assistant coach, received a text from former team-mate, and man of Durham, Will Smith shortly after the close of play on day three, with Hampshire still 33 short of Surrey's target.

Only James Fuller and Brad Wheal stood between Hampshire, a Surrey win and seemingly inevitable relegation.
