Russell Domingo’s first game in charge of Hampshire may have ended in an inglorious and painfully short defeat to Essex, but his arrival on the south coast has been a long time coming.

Speaking to The Hawk from the bright sunshine of the atrium at the Utilita Bowl - having just seen Fletcha Middleton hit a hundred for Hampshire Second XI against Nottinghamshire - Domingo has already banished the dark cloud of that opening week loss.

“I actually put my name into the hat for this job seven years ago and then went out for lunch with Adi Birrell,” he says.
