There are plenty who agree that the 18-year-old Totton & Eling product is as rare a talent as Hampshire has produced in a generation.

You would certainly have to go back to the days of James Vince and Liam Dawson to find a player who has generated such significant excitement among Hampshire members and the wider cricket-loving public.

Despite struggling in Hampshire's opener against Essex - he was far from alone in that - Mayes looked in fine form against Yorkshire at Headingley last week.
