When the Hawk caught up with Hampshire's One Day Cup coach Jimmy Adams, on the eve of Hampshire's campaign in the competition, he made it clear that the tournament represented the perfect opportunity to blood the young stars of the future.

Ben Mayes was the name that kept coming up time and again in conversation.

But not even Adams could have predicted just how big an impact he would have in a campaign that saw Hampshire come agonisingly close to a first piece of 50 over silverware since 2018.

Already an England under-19 regular, and having signed his first contract with Hampshire at the end of July, the Hawk understands that Mayes was close to spending this summer as part of the Northern Superchargers side in the Hundred.
